Bold Against Monsters – Class Reference Sheets

These are class reference sheets for BAM.

Download the free PDF HERE.

If you aren’t familiar with BAM, it is my rules light 5e comparable RPG named “Bold Against Monsters” that I refer to as BAM. It is available for free (or pay what you want) on DriveThruRPG HERE.

Bold Against Monsters – available now on DriveThruRPG

I am proud to announce that I have just published my first title on DriveThruRPG. My new title, Bold Against Monsters, was just activated for public sale. It’s free (or pay what you want) so please check it out and, if you like it, please tell all your friends!

Here is link to the DriveThruRPG page.

This is an update to the version that I posted here last week. I added information regarding magic items, revised the cover image, and made many minor corrections and revisions (mostly cosmetic). The file is somewhat larger because it is 2 pages longer and I increased the resolution on all the images.

Get your free copy there (or pay what you like if you can and want to help support me). Also it would help a lot if you could spread the word about it and where it can be found.

Some of you have mentioned in the past that I should publish some of the stuff that I have always provided here for free. I want to assure everyone that everything on this blog will continue to be free. I am hoping that by publishing on DriveThruRPG I might reach a larger audience and maybe even start making a little more than I get from the adds here on this site. Please let me know your thoughts on this in the comments below.

Update: 11/2/2025 The PDF is no longer free on DriveThruRPG. But I am now providing a freee copy HERE on this blog.

Bold Against Monsters – Core Rule Book – free PDF download

Let me introduce Bold Against Monsters. (You can call it BAM.). This is a new D&D 5E compatible rules-light Role Playing Game that I – the Old Dungeon Master – just finished writing.

Download your free 74 page PDF copy of the BAM Core Rule Book HERE.
An updated version is available for free (or pay what you want) on DriveThruRPG. Here is the link:
https://olddungeonmaster.com/2025/10/31/bold-against-monsters-free-pdf-of-published-version/

I started with the 2014 versions of Dungeons and Dragons (5E). Then, based on my 40+ years of DMing, I eliminated or changed things I thought could be improved, added things I prefer from the 2024 versions of Dungeons and Dragons (5.5) and Tales of the Valiant (ToV), and used some of the concepts found in ShadowDark RPG (SD), modified for a more 5E compatible campaign. To all of this, I added some of my favorite house rules to come up with the Table Top Role Playing Game – Bold Against Monstrers. This is the game I like best. Give it a try, I think you will like it too.

This Core Rule Book contains everything you need to play the game (except for the dice). It is compatible for use with any published 5E adventure for characters up to level 10. It can serve as an introduction to 5E role playing for new players or anyone looking for a game with familiar characters you can easily create and quickly play. Character creation, level advancement, inventory tracking, proficiencies, spellcasting, combat, and more have been simplified without moving too far from the basics I love about the 5E game system.

This was made possible through the use of the D&D 5E and D&D 5.5 rules as published under Creative Commons License in SRD_CC_v5.1 and SRD_CC_v5.2 respectively, the ToV rules published as “Black Flag Roleplaying” under the ORC license, and the “Shadowdark RPG Third-Party License V1.1”. No AI was used in creating this. All artwork was found on-line with commercial licenses, or created by the author.

Update #1: 6/24/2025 (BAM Rules_v2.pdf) Minor changes
Removed the “Lifting and Carrying” and the “Push, Drag, or Lift” sections. They were in conflict with “Gear Slots”. I renumbered the pages (and updated the Table of Contents) so now when going to a page in the PDF, the number on the page will match the page number of the PDF file. Corrected misspellings (thanks to the comment from larrymannplays). Made a couple of cosmetic and formatting changes.

I’m always looking to improve my resources for the D&D community!  I would love to hear your feedback on this new RPG. Let me know what you think in the comments below. I am especially interested in your opinion on which rules you like or would have done differently.

Download your free form-fillable PDF BAM character sheet HERE.

The BAM Core Rule Book includes a character sheet on the back cover, but I also created this form-fillable version.

You will need to enter your ability modifiers and character level before the calculations for Weapons and Armor Class can be made. You can select Ancestry, Background, Class, Deity, and Weapons from drop-down lists, or enter any text in the box. For selected text, the features and other information below will fill in. For Ancestry, Background, Class, or Weapons text you typed in, you can enter any information below as you would like. To change the information below a selection you made, just change the name (adding a space behind the name will do). Clearing the text in the box, or making a different selection from the drop-down, will delete all the text below it.

Selecting your armor and shield from the drop-downs will calculate and display your Armor Class (AC).

Refer to the BAM Core Rule Book for information regarding Gear Slots. All the Weapons, Armor, Tools, and other equipment listed in that book can be selected from drop-downs, or you can type any text you want into the boxes.

There are now free Class Reference Sheets available to download HERE.

D&D 5.5 PHB Review (Creating a Character)

Abbreviations: In the following I am referring to Wizards of the Coast as WotC, Dungeons and Dragons as D&D, the Players Handbook as the PHB, the 2014 version as 5E and to the 2024 version as 5.5.

The D&D 5.5 PHB: Review of “Chapter 2, Creating a Character”

I am assuming that the reader is familiar with the 5E PHB, so I am only commenting on things that are new or different from the 5E version.

Chapter 2, Creating a Character

Note: This chapter includes a sample Character Sheet with a big numbered dot in each of the spaces that corresponds to the step where you get that information. This can be useful, but there is NO blank Character Sheet in the book that you can photocopy like there is in the 5E PHB.
You can download a blank PDF of the Character Sheet that it has in the book on D&D Beyond, but it doesn’t mention that in this book. It does say you can use a “printed character sheet (like the one shown on the following pages), a digital character sheet like the one on D&D Beyond, or plain paper.”
For those of you who don’t know, D&D Beyond didn’t exist when D&D 5E was published in 2014. It was founded in 2018 and, in partnership with WotC, developed a character generator for D&D 5E. It later added an encounter builder and a combat tracker. WotC bought D&D Beyond in 2022 so it should be of no surprise that it is mentioned several times in this book.

Step 1: Choose a Class

In 5E you selected your race (now called species) first. In 5.5 you select your class first.

CLASSES: D&D 5.5 has the same 12 classes that are in the D&D 5E PHB. It refers you to Chapter 3 for the class details.
A BALANCED PARTY: It recommends the party contain a Cleric (can substitute a Bard or Druid), Fighter (can substitute a Barbarian, Monk, Paladin, or Ranger), Rogue (can substitute a Bard or Ranger) and Wizard (can substitute a Bard, Sorcerer, or Warlock).
WRITE YOUR LEVEL: Level 1, 0 XP.

Step 2: Determine Origin

BACKGROUND: It refers you to Chapter 4 for the backgrounds.
STARTING EQUIPMENT: You get some starting equipment from your background and some from your class.
SPECIES: The word “race” has been replaced with the word “species”.  It refers you to Chapter 4 for the species.
IMAGINE YOUR PAST: It has some questions to help you come up with a backstory. There are no Ideals, Bonds, or Flaws.
LANGUAGES: You get Common and two other languages. You don’t get any languages from your Species or your Background. The list of standard languages has expanded to include Common Sign Language and Draconic. Thieves’ Cant has been added to the rare languages list.  A note regarding Primordial reads “Primordial includes the Aquan, Auran, Ignan, and Terran dialects. Creatures that know one of these dialects can communicate with those that know a different one.”
The language tables no longer list Typical Speakers or Script, instead it has a column listing the languages origin.

Step 3: Ability Scores

GENERATE YOUR SCORES: The methods are the same. The Point Cost system (often referred to as the Point Buy system) is just one of the standard ways to determine your scores, it is no longer called a variant.
ASSIGN ABILITY SCORES: There is a “Standard Array by Class” table that recommends which score to assign to which ability, based on your class.
ADJUST ABILITY SCORES: Your background lists three abilities; add one point to each of these or add 2 to one and 1 to another one.
DESCRIBE APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY: For each ability there is a table with 4 potential descriptions of your character depending on whether he has a high or low score in that ability. Write it on your sheet.

Step 4: Alignment

The NINE ALIGNMENTS: Same as always. There has been speculation as to whether or not alignments would be dropped from D&D altogether. I’m glad they kept them. Of note is that there are no alignment tendencies for Species (previously Races).
It says “D&D assumes that player characters aren’t of an evil alignment. Check with your DM before making an evil character.” This agrees with what I have always done. I have never allowed evil player characters in my games.

Step 5: Fill in the Details

CLASS FEATURES: From class’s feature table in chapter 3.
FILL IN NUMBERS: Enter onto your Character sheet; Saving Throws, Skills, Passive Perception, Hit Points, Hit Point Dice, Initiative (your Dexterity modifier), Armor Class, Attacks, Spellcasting, Spell Slots, Cantrips, and Prepared Spells.
NAME YOUR CHARACTER: Same as always.

Starting at Higher Levels

This is a much needed section that includes a table of Starting Equipment at Higher Levels.

Multiclassing

Multiclassing was an optional set of rules in D&D 5E. It is no longer an option, it is a part of the core rules.
None of the rules for multiclassing change, but in the new book, in several places you will have to look up specific information in other places in the book.

For example; PREREQUISITS: These rules don’t change, but you have to have a minimum score of 13 in the primary ability of your current class and your new class. The difference here is that in 5E there is a table that makes it clear that for classes with more than one prime ability you must have a 13 in all of them. The primary ability for each class is the first thing listed on the Core Traits table for that character in its section in Chapter 3, Character Classes; and in the Class Overview table in Chapter 2, Creating a Character, Step 1: Choose a Class.
Another minor change in wording is that, for all classes except for the wizard, it uses “spells you have prepared” in place of “spells you know.”

I’ll be making a separate post for each class. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

D&D 5E – NEW Time Travel Rules

NEW Time Travel Rules

In 2015 I posted my Time Travel Rules for Fifth Edition D&D. I have updated those rules. You can download the new version HERE (its free).

These new house rules are more streamlined and easier to implement into your game. One problem with the older version is that it contained very little for players who characters weren’t spellcasters, and spellcasters didn’t get very many useful time related spells. So this version includes Time Points, Time Checks, and 71 Chronology spells.

Time Points: A character’s Time Points represent his ability to detect and interact with the timeline. All PCs get Time Points as they advance in level. They can spend them for things like rewinding time to re-roll a d20 (even a death save), or take a different action. Or have some other creature re-roll his attack. You get a chance to regain a lost or spent Time Point after a long rest. Also, as you accumulate more Time Points you gain bonuses to certain ability checks.

Time Checks: These are tied to your Time Points. When the DM has you make a Time Check you roll a d20 and add your Wisdom ability modifier and Time Points to the D20 roll. Several spells require you to succeed on a Time Check or the spell fails.

Chronology Spells: There is no Chronomancy class. If your character is attuned to the flow of time (as represented by your Time Points) and has one or more levels in a class that can cast magic spells, you can add all of the chronology spells to the spell list for that class. Otherwise, none of the spell casting rules for your class are changed. Player characters can add these to their list of spells available to their spellcasting class.

Another problem with any time travelling campaign is that the most useful time travel spells are necessarily high level spells that lower level PCs won’t have access to. This would appear to limit you to high level adventures. To address this I have included many low level spells and I am also working on a series of Time Travelling adventures (an adventure arc) that will take your group from level 1 up through level 20. I am calling it “It’s About Time“. I will be posting these here as they become available. As always, these will be free for you to download and use in your campaigns.

Pleas leave comments below.

Enjoy!

D&D 5E – Chains of Asmodeus

Chains of Asmodeus

I have said here that I will not be buying any Wizard’s of the Coast products this year. This is an exception. The proceeds go to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals© and not to WotC or Hasbro.

This is only available (for now) as a $30.00 PDF on Dungeon Masters Guild. It is not being advertised, or even mentioned, by Wizards of the Coast. I can only assume that this is because they are not making any money from it. However, it is excellent!

Chains of Asmodeus is a massive release. It is a 268 page source book and high level adventure through the Nine Hells. WotC hasn’t published many adventures for high level parties, but this adventure takes your character’s from 11th through 20th level.

As per it’s page on Dungeon Masters Guild, the book contains:

  • 50+ High Challenge Monsters
  • Stat Blocks for Asmodeus, Lord of the Nine, and all major Archdevils
  • 20+ Infernal Magic Items
  • New Item Corruption Mechanic
  • Details on all Layers of the Nine Hells, with Beautifully Illustrated Maps created by John Stevenson
  • A Fiendish Adventure for Levels 11-20

Thanks to Nerd Immersion‘s YouTube review for turning me onto this.

And, for those of you that are interested in even more background information; back in 1984 Ed Greenwood wrote some excellent articles on the Nine Hells which were printed in issues #75, #76 and #91 of DRAGON Magazine.
