D&D 5E – Simplified Rules

5.0-EZ

UPDATE: Download the latest (version 6) HERE.

If you sometimes feel that the fifth edition Dungeons and Dragons rules are too complicated, this is for you. I created this set of house rules to simplify character creation and advancement among other things. It also introduces a whole new way to select and track the casting of magic spells.
One thing I tried very hard to do was keep the characters levels and power as close as possible to the Player’s Handbook characters so that if you play using these rules, you can still use published 5th edition adventures, and the monsters will require little or no modifications.

Here is what is on the EZ character sheet.

Okay, so I’ve just found this, and it looks great. One question. Is the fighter’s 2 actions/round thing supposed to be 1/rest, like in the PHB? Because as far as I can tell, it’s listed as just take 2 actions per round, effectively giving the fighter a second attack at 2nd level. That seems off to me, but I’m kind of new to D&D. And maybe the 1/rest label is there, and I just have a wisdom of -2.

      Nice catch.
Yes, Under Fighter, Level 2, instead of “take 2 Actions each round” it should read “take 2 Actions in one round (1/rest)”. And under Level 17, instead of “take 3 actions each round” it should read “take 2 actions in one round (2/rest)”
There are some formatting changes I want to make, and I will include these changes when I update the file.
If you see any other obvious (or not so obvious) mistakes, please let me know.
      Thank you.

Thank you so much Ronny for putting this for us. This is greatly appreciated. Next campaign, I’m using these rules for sure ! However, may I kindly ask that you add two more classes and races, in order to give more options to players ? The monk and the ranger would be a nice additions, as well as Gnomes and Half-Orc.

And I’m so glad you introduced mana to replace spell slots (which I’ve never been fond of).

    Great work !

      Thank you,
It has been my intention all along to late post a supplement to this adding more races and classes, if this proved popular. Perhaps not all of the ones in the PHB, but definitely the ones you mentioned.
However it may be a while. I have another project I am working on (an update to my character sheet with additional reference sheets for each class and subclass). And my spare time is being eaten up with other things right now.
      Stay tuned.

Must say, I like this a lot. Have been playing around with D&D Basic rules (the one from the 70ties) and this one is a bit more complicated but still simple so it leaves more to the players and less to the rules.

    Hi Ronny,

Sorry to bother you again. I’ve been trying to recreate your character sheet for 5.0-EZ in Ms-Word with little success. Do have an editable version that you could share with us ? Thank you again fro your great work.

I am glad that you were able to make your changes using MS Word. I don’t know if I could have done that. I have made so many changes and switched formats so many times If I had to make any major changes I might have to just start over.
The last changes I made I did in PhotoShop. Let me know if you would like a copy of the PhotoShop file.

In order to not only receiving but also sharing, here for everyone, the link to my own personal version of the character sheet for 5.0-EZ editable. You may easily add back what ever I removed (sorry, I deleted the orignal file but mine is close enough).

    Enjoy !

Hi, is it possible to get a word version? Some of my friends don’t speak english so I want to translate some of it, and it would be much easier if I didn’t have to format it all over again, just rewriting the text. Thanks πŸ™‚
