D&D 5E – Character Sheet Makeover [rev6]

My 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons auto-fill Character sheet has a new – old sheet look. Other than the new look I also added a few things.

  • I added a fourth page just for notes. Many have complained that there wasn’t enough room for all the notes you needed. Or you could use it for your character background. Or both.
  • There is a place at the top of each page labeled #___ . I use this to keep track of my character sheets. I print a new sheet after my character goes up a level, and sometime more often. Before I print it I give it a new number. Or if you have more than one character you may want to note which one this is.
  • The character name is now on each sheet and it is bigger.
  • There is now a spot for listing Rogue’s sneak attack, Barbarian ranges, Monk ki points and Monk martial arts.
  • Total weight carried now works. It adds up the weight of all the items listed above.
  • Below the number of cantrips known there is now a space for number of spells known or available and for sorcery points.

    Great set. One small problem: when you enter data in the Saves/Tools/Weapons areas, the text boxes overlap the title boxes resulting in poor readability.

    That new one covers that problem quite well. but on the other page (with the directions) I left a list of other problems I found and duplicated this comment there, so you can ignore point 1. If you can clean up the Background section, you’ve got a winner. I haven’t seen any other sheet that comes close to yours. Terrific work.

    Really appreciate the time and effort you have put into these, thank you so much. They are superb.

    From what I can tell, the text alignment issue (on lines/form text fields) seems to be specific to the OS, editing software and even instance of opening….

    My work laptop (ahem, I’m very busy) shows the sheets with all text aligned perfectly (windows 7, Opera, Adobe Acrobat Reader DC)

    My home pc, (windows 10, on all of Adobe Acrobat Reader & Foxit standalone apps and embedded into Opera and IE11) shows page 4 (Background notes) misaligned, with fonts being “struck through” by the lines.

    My home laptop, (windows 7, Opera, AAR) shows on occasion (not every time!), the numbers in the Proficiencies box on Page 1, misaligned and the top 1/3rd of the number are lost….however if I hit “recalculate” they sometimes re-align…

    So basically, unless you know a magic trick,I think it’s never going to be perfect on all computers at all times – so would recommend not breaking your neck trying to achieve the impossible.

      Thank you very much for your in-depth comment. Hopefully, this will help those who are having trouble with the text not always lining up.
      F.Y.I. I am on a PC running Windows 10 and, although I use Acrobat to edit the files, I find that they look best when I use my default PDF reader which is PDF-XChange Viewer. It can be downloaded and installed for free from here:

      I would appreciate it if you would try it out using this program. If there is still a problem then it may be an installed fonts issue.
      Thanks again and I hope you enjoy playing D&D as much as I do. I am afraid that all my magic tricks are limited to the tabletop.

    Hi Ronny, great sheets! I especially love the built-in calculations.
    While writing up a 5E fighter I thought about using the spell sheet (page 3) for maneuvers.
    So… in a future version if you’d consider adding Strength/Dex as the primary ability that would be very handy. I realize it’s re-purposing that page but I’d rather use it and the valuable page-space than let it go to waste and/or have to write-up maneuvers in notes or something.

    Hey Ronny, I just found your site and I have to say it is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to learn new rules and brush up my skills.

    I was wondering if you could also include attunement slots? I know they aren’t on the normal character sheet, but my players tend to like high-magic campaigns so the attunement slots are a great way for preventing them from being ridiculously overpowered.

      Hey Jon, excellent idea. It may be a while before I post a revised sheet, but I will definitely add attunement slots.
      Want to hear something funny? It took me a while to figure out how to have it place a “+” sign before positive numbers (after others told me that it couldn’t be done). But I got carried away and did that to the “passive perception” box. It should not read +13 for instance, it should just be 13.
      If you have other suggestions for changes or additions to the sheet please pass them on.

    Hello Ronny,

    First of all I want to thank you for this amazing character sheet! It has made my gameplay experience far more organized, easier and overall far more enjoyful!

    It has been quite a while since I used this character sheet and I have reached a small problem our party has reached level 20 and from now on the Leveling process is what we called being “Unbound”. Soon I will reach level 21 and I wanted to ask if there is any way for me to modify and unlock the pdf to get to a higher level than what it has been preset to do? The point being that I will have to add additional proficiency modifiers for higher levels etc etc.

      Hi Guglielmo,
      I am glad to hear that you have been enjoying my character sheet.
      I will answer your question the way I often had to answer questions when I was a computer software manager – “You can’t do that, so here is how you can do it.”
      First, this was never intended to be used beyond the maximum level that is in the Player’s Handbook. So the simple answer its to clear the sheet and print out a blank sheet and fill it out the old fashion way – with a pencil. Or you can download this older fillable version that does not do any calculations:

      Second, the pdf isn’t “locked”. If you have a copy of Adobe Acrobat X1 Pro you can edit it. [Perhaps there is also some free pdf editor that will work.] Go to “Edit Forms” and then “edit Fields”. First select the “Level” field and remove the field value range, or increase it. Then select and edit “Next Level XP”, and proficiency “Bonus”, and perhaps there are some other fields that I am forgetting. Change each of them to what you need them to be based on the value in the “Bonus” field.
      Because there are no official rules in the Player’s Handbook for how Proficiency bonuses change with levels above 20, or what the XP goals are for the higher levels, I don’t want to change the form for everyone.
      There is also no simple way that I have discovered to allow the user to enter values into the calculated fields.

    I love these sheets and the work on them is awesome, i did however run into a small problem on the second spell sheet, when i went to write in the spell name in the first two boxes, it copies them to the boxes below

        No worries, i used it like an overflow and set it “at higher levels” it was just the name and level not the main content that copied 🙂
