D&D 5E – Character Sheet – Autofill (rev4)

SHEETATTHETABLE

Revised Auto-fill Character Sheet for Dungeons and Dragons 5e.

UPDATE: The character sheets on this page are an older version. For the most recent auto-calculate Character Sheets click HERE.

You can download this free character sheet here: 5-0-character-sheet-rrh-fillable-rev4d.pdf

I think that I have fixed the problem with vanishing test! If you have had problems with this character sheet, please download this revised version.

There is a post with box-by-box instructions on how to fill out the Character Sheet HERE.

I revised the weapons areas and the special features section on the second page.

The weapon boxes are no longer labeled “Melee Weapon” and “Ranged Weapon”. Any box can be used for ether.  You select to use a Strength or Dexterity ability bonus. For two weapon fighting, you can remove the ability bonus for damage. You can now add a separate bonus (or penalty) to attack or damage. The damage dice box is big enough to list two damage amounts (for versatile weapons).

I removed the notes section on the second page to allow more room for trait and feature descriptions.

In the “Background” section, there is an anomoly. There are a bunch of dots that take up various sections of the typing space. Am I missing something, or is there a way around this?

What PDF reader are you using? It sounds like the one you are using is highlighting the existing fields with dotted lines around them. See if there is an option to turn this feature off. Or you could download the latest Adobe Reader (it is free) and try it. If you are then still experiencing this problem, let me know and I will see what I can do.

I believe this happens (lots of dots) when you are missing a font. I get a “missing font” popup when opening the sheet (on OSX and Windows).
Also, I can’t seem to enter some weapon information. “Damage dice”, “Reach or Range”, “Type” will not store any value (I type them in, they disappear)

I am having the same issue, pop-up stating a missing font: CooperBlackSTD. Form filled with dots and other odd artifacts. Very annoying. I just installed the latest version of Adobe Reader on Windows 7, same issue 😦

Ronny, I’ve got the same issue with the CooperBlackSTD font missing and the dots. Plus the DMG dice will not enter. On my DM’s PC running Windows 7 Home Premium and the latest version of Adobe Reader. Wonder if we can Download the font some how? But that wouldn’t account for the information fields not filling.

The fonts are legible now however, fields such as weapon damage type and damage dice still refuse to show information I type into them. I’ll just pencil it in for now 🙂 Appreciate the quick response on this!

I am glad that helped a little. Perhaps it is a Windows 7 thing. You didn’t mentions the dots. Do you still them?

Those dots are gone and I can now read the actual field headings. So your fonts are working fine now. I’ll check this one out at home on my Windows 8.1 OS and see what results I get regarding the field entries.

I can’t seem to be able to create a double proficiency to any of the skills, Do you think that is something that could be done or is it not allowed on your character? I’m pretty new to d&d but my thought was if your class and backstory have common proficiencies that you should be able to double them up.

i’m starting playing DnD , so this website has helped me in different matters, and i was checking the autofill character sheet, and ”testing” it out with the stats of my players’ characters, i noticed that even if someone inserts the d20 roll on the dexterity, the resulted bonus only appears on the dexterity area. I thought the initiative bonus was equal to the dex ability bonus, so, shouldn’t it auto-fill at the same time?

    • Ronny February 19, 2015 at 7:48 am

I am glad that there are things here that have been of use to you.
As to your question, yes you are correct. Your character’s initiative bonus is normally equal to your Dex ability modifier. The form does not calculate your initiative bonus and fill that in for you. The reason is that in some cases your imitative bonus may be different from that. An example is if your character had the “alert” feat. That would give your character an additional +5 bonus to his initiative. This character sheet was never intended to calculate every possible bonus to every box. As a mater of fact, I was hesitant to have it calculate the skills modifiers because they could be overridden by a specific feat or trait, but I decided to make the player handle that with a note. For most skills when there is an exception it is normally for a specific use of the skill, and not for all cases.
Thank you very much for your question. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Thank you for the answer and explanation. Just learned a new thing for the game. Me and my players are just starting recently, so this autofill character sheet helps to not forget the little things and some calculations that we might would go back and forth in the manuals to search for it.

Yes. Please send me a copy, or provide a link. I would indeed be interested. I would think that would involve drop-down lists for every race and class and background. That would be quite an undertaking! Will it also work for multi-class characters?

For now, could you be more specific as to which fields are giving you a problem and describe in more detail that the problem is. For example: Is it that in certain fields when you enter text you can see the text until you click on another field and then it disappears? If so, does the text seam to be there but not displaying? I mean, if you click on a field you previously entered text into, does the text re-appear, until you click back out of it? Or, Is the field empty and even if you re-enter the text it still goes away when you click out of it? Or, do the fields simply not allow text to be entered.
Are the offending boxes all text boxes? Do all of the calculations function correctly? The more specific you can be the better my chance of fixing this.
        Thanks again for your help.

The problem I am having is on the Weapon box area.

The box that you type in the name of the weapon works fine.
The Reach or Range box you can see what you type in but once you click on another field it disappears.
The Type box you can see what you type in but once you click on another field it disappears.
The Ability check boxes works and it will show “STR” or “DEX” bonus in the box and that number gets added in to the Atack Bonus right.
If you check mark the little box for Ability the Damage Bonus shows up but you need to click on the Update Calulation button to get the right Damage Bonus.
If you don’t check mark the little box for Ability the Damage Bonus you can see what you type in but once you click on another field it disappears.
The Proficiency check box showes the check mark and shows the Proficiency bonus in the box under the check mark and that number gets added in to the Atack Bonus right.
The Magic bonus box works right and that number gets added in to the Atack Bonus and Damage Bonus.
The Misc bonus box works right and that number gets added in to the Atack Bonus.
The Misc bonus box works right and that number gets added in to the Damage Bonus.
The Damage Dice box you can see what you type in but once you click on another field it disappears.

        One-more-time. Try it now (rev4c).
I fixed the last weapon box on page 1. And I fixed the text not lining up with the lines on the notes section on page 1.
As for only being able to load PDF files for character sketches, this is a limitation of Adobe Acrobat. I would much rather allow inserting any graphic file format, or if I had to choose one, I would pick JPG. A quick Google search for “free jpg to pdf converter” will provide you with several good options though.

To quote Barbossa: “I’m disinclined to acquiesce to your request.”
Now that I have it all working, I am going to leave it alone for a while. My main idea for the race and background section was that, as a player, I was always trying to figure out where all of my numbers came from. After playing for a while, it seams like there was always one or two points of “to hit” or damage that I couldn’t account for.
For the next version of the character sheet (no time soon) please make your argument as to why I should add “Equipment based on background”.
Of course, in the mean time, you probably don’t need two lines for “Languages based on background” so – after the languages – you could enter “EQUIPMENT:” and type it in there.
Thank you again for your feedback – I couldn’t have fixed it without your input.

First off I want to thank you. This is, by far, the best auto fill character sheet I’ve been able to find. I do have a question though. I filled out the sheet on my web browser and saved it. Once it was saved all the filled information was wiped. I tried to make another attempt by saving the file to my computer and filling out the saved file but it loses its autocalculation abilities. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way around this or a way to fix it?

It was never intended to be filled out in your web browser. That may be causing your problems. I believe that if you download the PDF file to your computer first, then copy it to another name and use Adobe Reader to fill it in and then save it you will avoid the problems you are having.
Let me know if doing it this way solves your problem.

This is so great, thanks for the sheets.

I do have a suggestion for a feature, though. Rogues can choose to be an expert in a particular skill (expertise) in which you’re already proficient. Being an expert in a proficient skill doubles the proficiency bonus on skill checks. At level 1, Rogues can choose 2 proficiency skills or 1 proficiency skill and theive’s tools, and again at level 6.

E.g. My level 6 rogue with 18 dexterity (+4 modifier) is proficient in acrobatics, so the skill check has a +7 bonus. With expertise in acrobatics, that becomes +10. At level 9, say my dex is 20 (+5 modifier). Then the acrobatics skill modifier is +5+4+4, or 13. Do you think there’s a way you can incorporate this to your character sheet?

Also, I have issues filling in the “Range” “Type” and “Damage dice” portions of the weapons using Windows 8.1 Adobe Reader version 11.0.10. With the weapon named, everything else is fine, just the information for those fields do not stay. (Looking above, I see someone else mentioned this above)

    Thanks again!

    • Ronny March 11, 2015 at 11:10 pm

Thanks for the comment. This is a good suggestion, and I could see where it is needed for rogues. However, I think it would add a lot of complexity to the sheet that might be confusing to players of non-rogues. However, a class specific sheet, just for rogues, might be a good idea. Of course that opens a big can of worms. Each class will want their own sheet. And then what about muti-class characters? For now I guess you will have to handle it with notes.
The sheet does work better for lower level characters. Perhaps some day I will get really energetic and try to do a more complex sheet that will handle all cases.
As for the “vanishing text” fields. I am working on fixing that. If you know of any Adobe Acrobat experts I could use some help solving that one.

      Like

      • Anonymous March 12, 2015 at 4:50 pm

Well, I noticed something else that maybe of interest to you for the vanishing text.

If I make changes to the offensive fields in a different editor, in this case PDF-XChange, everything works fine, but the font is different (and too big – a defect of the editor, not your forms). When I save the changes and open it in Adobe Reader v11.0.10, all changes made in PDF-XChange remain with the uglier font. However, once I update calculations or click on a check box, the font reverts to Adobe Reader’s default and the text in the vanishing fields disappear again.

Which version of Adobe Reader did you test it on? If you’d like, I can try to downgrade my Adobe Reader to see if it works with that version.

        I also found this: https://forums.adobe.com/message/4477271.

Regarding rogue sheets, I completely understand. I was hoping it would be a somewhat simple fix, such as the proficiency check boxes having two types of check marks, where a second click would double the proficiency bonus, and a third click would uncheck it. That said, I have not made an interactive PDF before, so I do not know.

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to make these sheets. They’re awesome.

Excellent! I don’t have time to work on it just now, but I think that you have discovered (possibly) the answer. It sounds like a problem displaying a particular font. It must be a font that some people have (those are the people for whom it works) and some don’t. What I can do is check what font it is using and change it to a common font.
I will let you know. – By the way, I am using the most recent Adobe Reader. if I am right it would enplane why it works on my computer. I obviously have that font.

In 5E your character ether is proficient in a skill or he isn’t. You can’t “double up” on a skill. Your proficiency bonus is added to your ability modifier. Your proficiency bonus increases as your character increases in level. Your ability modifier can increase if you add to that ability score as you increase in levels.

still, maybe you can add a feature where even though it calculates the modifiers and such, it should allow for user input in case they kind of want to go by some of their own rules. D&D is purposely an open ended RPG for that reason, so adding that would allow for the same ability to kind of bend and twist the rules to the player’s liking. By all means though I am not insulting you or your response, it is very much appreciated that you provided me with the info i requested. What I say is more of a suggestion than anything. Thankyou

        Hi Jacob.
I appreciate your input. You are not the first to suggest that the form allow for more varied user input. I agree that one of the great things about the game is how easy it is for any group to play it in whatever way is the most fun for them. Unfortunately, I can’t make it automatically calculate the numbers and also allow you to change those numbers. Or, perhaps I could, but it would create more problems than it would solve.
You can print a blank sheet and fill it in with a pencil however you want, Or you can download this one that you can fill out any way you want. It doesn’t make all those calculations:

        Hello Rony, you have some skills with double proficiency bonus, for example, the Knowledge Domain Cleric (D&D Player’s Handbook Chapter 3, P. 59) and Rogue’s Expertise (D&D Player’s Handbook Chapter 3, P. 96), have doubled profiency bonus on 2 skills of their choice, so there’s no way to do that on your sheet;

        HI seapher.
You are exactly right. I completely overlooked this. My apologies to Jacob. I guess that I need to add a box to allow double proficiency bonus. It looks like it is time for another update. It may take a week or more. I will also review all of the other suggestions and requests. If you see ant other areas for improvement, please let me know.
        Stay tuned.

I am sorry you are having problems with this, but I just downloaded a fresh copy and I can’t duplicate your error. I set the level to 4, which set the proficiency bonus to 2, and then entered some random ability scores. When I check the box, it adds 2 to the ability modifier and enters the correct number for the saving throw.
Perhaps the error only occurs with the specific level and ability scores you are using. Please let me know what level and ability scores you are using that produce this error. Also, if anyone else is reading this that can duplicate this error please let me know.

I just stumbled across your site while doing some 5e googling. Really nice work! This will save me a ton of time on my next character. 🙂

Awesome work Ronny! My buddies and I are making the switch from 4e to 5e and your pdf was a godsend! Keep it up! Also, I’ve alerted the 2 gaming shops I play at to let them know about this great tool. Lots of thanks from Miami 🙂

Love these forms! One minor bug, on the first weapon slot the ability STR/DEX check box will only show STR bonus and not switch to DEX.

Maybe a dumb question. Doesn’t choice of race affect ability modifiers? I’ve noticed entering race does not affect abilities – nor can you edit the modifiers. Or does race affect the roll itself?

There is no such thing as a dumb question.
A lot of new players have trouble understanding the difference between ability scores and ability modifiers.
Choice of race only indirectly affects ability modifiers. What it does is modify some of your ability SCORES which in turn may change those ability modifiers.
This sheet does not make those ability score modifications for you. After rolling up your ability scores, you should modify them based on your race choice before you enter the scores onto the sheet, The sheet will calculate the modifiers based on the ability scores. Also, as you progress in level, depending on class, you may increase some of your ability scores.
Again, the ability modifiers are always based on the ability scores and cannot be modified directly.
I hope this answers your question. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any other “dumb” questions. I specialize in dumb answers.

Thanks. I had it the other way around. I thought it only affected the modifiers. Good to know. I’m sue I will have more “dumb questions”. I haven’t played since I played AD&D in high school – and I know I only had a weak grasp of the rules back then.

I think you will like the new rules better. I know that I do. They are a little simpler and a lot more logical and consistent (no more thaco). Basically you always roll a d20 and bigger numbers are always better. Add any bonuses and compare the total to a target number.
Have fun and let me know how it goes.

    Hi,
Where do I find printed 5th edition Dungeon and Deagon character sheets to purchase online? My incarcerated son needs them. I do not have a computer or an automobile by choice.

    Thank you,
    His Mom

I just did a search and couldn’t find any for 5th edition. There is one in the back of the Player’s Handbook (you can order from Amazon) that you are allowed to copy for personal use. That is what most people do. They published character sheets for earlier editions. I suppose that they didn’t think there was a market for the pre-printed sheets. Perhaps you have a friend that can download the one here and print out a few blank copies for you?

When I save it and go to open it again, it will not let me edit the sheet. Older characters that I have made with this same sheet still let me edit, am I doing something wrong, or is that feature broken or removed for some reason?

It sounds like your file has been corrupted. I have done nothing to limit your editing ability. I recommend downloading a new copy of the file and starting over. You should be able to save and later load the saved file and continue making changes.
What I do is save a copy under a different name each time my character advances a level so I always have a copy of the PCs previous level sheet for reference.
Because you say that you can still open and edit your older character sheets, I don’t think you are doing anything wrong. If you do find that it was something that you are doing differently that is causing the problems, please share your experience. There may be others in the same situation.
If none of this works, please let me know and provide more specific information (the exact name of the file you downloaded, what type of computer you are using and what operating system, what PDF reader are you using, etc.).
