D&D 5E – Adventure Module – Fires of Hell

Fires of Hell - Cover

A free adventure module for fifth edition Dungeons and Dragons.

Download the free adventure here: Fires of Hell

This  adventure takes place after a Total Party Kill (TPK).  It allows a group of DEAD PCs to earn a second chance by fighting their way through the first layer of Hell to retrieve a stolen artifact. It is unlike other modules in that it is written to accommodate a party of any size and any level (1 to 20).

This is a complete re-write of the module I posted previously. I updated the entire module to work with D&D 5E rules. It also includes converted monsters that are not in the 5E Monster Manual – on new color reference sheets – Abishai Devils, Kaorti Devils, Nupperibo Devils, Cranium Rat Swarms, and Winged Fiend Swarms (a new monster of my own creation), and Charon (Boatman of the Lower Planes).

I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it. Please post any comments you may have. Let me know if you find any of this useful.

    Ronny,
I just wanted to say I started running this adventure for a couple of friends of mine. We are all new to 5E with my only experience being with 4E and very little DMing experience. We did about an 8 hour session and probably got through about half the adventure. We all had a great time and are looking to continue it soon. The scaling options you built in work great! It turns out I was going a little easier on them than I should have, but once we got into the groove the adventure flowed smoothly. I chose this because we have been playing The Hoard of the Dragon Queen at our local store and wanted something new that wouldn’t take a lot of prep time on my end seeing how I was new to DMing. PS the spell cards you put up have been a huge help for me and I have passed them along to other players along with your site. Thanks again!

      James,
I am glad that you are enjoying this adventure. Please post again when you have finished. I took a chance and posted it with practically no play-testing so any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. I am glad that the scaling options worked for you. Making it for any level turned out to make it take twice as hard for me to write. I will think twice before I do that again.
Thanks for telling others about my site.

I’m planning on running this Wednesday night with a party of 3 l3s, 2 l2s, and a level 1! I’ll let you know how it works out.

What an assortment of characters! Some of the most fun I ever had as a DM was with 7 players. I never had a first level character along with a big group of 12th and 13th levels. Please let me know how it goes. Good luck, and have fun.

Quest went really well. I shaved it down a little bit and streamlined things, and actually avoided the final encounter with Karris. I made him super creepy and weird and made everyone absolutely hate him so I can’t wait to have he and his people show up in our ongoing campaign again soon, topside. Arraka pissed them off soooo much at the maggot pit which was great. The cursed treasure made for a really funny scene with our greedy little gnome.

And a clever wizard brought back some of Styx in a horse hoof flask. Maybe some hell hounds should chase that down later on haha.

        Took about 4.5 hours total

Awesome adventure! Question…do you have a template you use for your covers? Looking to start publishing my own adventures and like the old-school look.

A lot of this is a copy from the Module TSR 2608 “The Fires of Dis” You may want to post that some of this is not your original content

      You are correct.
It is a fan produced conversion to a newer version of the game with a change in the story-line. I never intended to represent this as original content. It was a mistake on my part not to mention it in this posting. If you look at the two earlier versions that I posted here it does say, “I modified an old AD&D adventure (The Fires of Dis) to accommodate a group of DEAD PCs to earn a second chance by fighting their way through the first layer of Hell to retrieve a stolen artifact.”. And on the cover it says, “It draws heavily from the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Planetscape adventure “Fires of Dis”, although access to that book or the “Planescape Campain Setting” is not required”. Perhaps I should have been more clear.
I would like to also say that MOST of this is not my original content. I modified “fires of Dis” heavenly to be a stand alone module with a different goal than “Fires of Dis”. I also updated it to work with 5E rules and a group of any character level.
I recommend anyone who enjoys this to find a copy of the original “Fires of Dis”. It is an excellent module. I was thinking of writing a tromp thru Hell for a second chance when I ran across it and decided that parts of it would be perfect.
Thank you for pointing out my omission. I will try to remember to credit original work that I have copied in future postings.

Thank you a lot. I used this module on a small scale for my campaign finale. My group is disbanding because half the members area moving to different places and its too far away to keep playing, so i had to figure something out for an ending.

It was amazing, their final enemy was a lich with an undead horde that was pushing every kingdom borders. They went and just tried to kill it. They failed and i used your module for them to find the phylactery. We all had a lot of fun.

Hey, Ronny. Just wanted to post a comment that I spent a lot of time converting this into a Fantasy Grounds module so I could run it for a few groups. I’ll be taking the first group through it next month. Can’t wait to run it. I’ll let you know how it goes. I’ll be recording the sessions as well and uploading to youtube.

Will do. I will also send you a link to my twitch channel as I plan to stream it live when I run it just in case you have any interest in watching. I’ve had several authors come into my channel to watch the stream of their adventures! I’ll find your email and send you the info directly once I have it. Thanks!

All I can say is “thank you so much.” I have been trying to find a new story to try with my group for so long. I am new to being a DM so I didn’t want to risk making my own just yet.
